La Liga side Espanyol replaced the sacked Sergio Gonzalez with former Romanian international Constantin Galca as the club's head coach on Monday. Gonzalez was fired after a run of just one win in their last eight games left Espanyol three points above the relegation zone in 12th.

Galca played over 100 times for Espanyol between 1997 and 2001 and was teammates with Gonzalez when the Barcelona-based club won the Copa del Rey 15 years ago. "Espanyol have decided in the past few hours to release the Catalan coach from his duties," the club said in a statement on their website. "The coach chosen to lead the Espanyol first team is Constantin Galca. "The Romanian will take charge of the squad in training this evening as the team prepares for the Copa del Rey match against Levante on Tuesday."
