Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan has signed a new three-year contract after finally ending his miserable run of injuries, the Premier League club announced on Friday. Flanagan's current deal was due to expire at the end of the season after he was given only a one-year extension following 20 months out with a knee problem.

The 23-year-old made his comeback in the FA Cup third-round replay at home to Exeter City in January after an absence of 619 days and has impressed in his four appearances since. "I've been through a lot in the last two years with the injury, and maybe a few people thought my future was in doubt but I've worked hard and this is a bonus at the end of it," Flanagan told Liverpool's website. "It's brilliant -- it's something I've always wanted to do since I was a child."
